SSC CGL DEST Typing Test Practice
SSC CGL DEST — what the Data Entry Speed Test checks
The Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) in SSC CGL is required mainly for the post of Tax Assistant in the CBDT and CBIC. Unlike a simple typing test, DEST measures your data entry speed — how quickly and accurately you can key in a printed English passage on a computer. The standard benchmark is 8,000 key depressions per hour, evaluated on a passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes.
Because DEST counts key depressions rather than words, every keystroke matters — letters, spaces, punctuation and capitalisation all count. This makes consistency more important than bursts of speed.

- Speed benchmark: 8,000 key depressions per hour.
- Test passage: ~2,000 key depressions to be typed in 15 minutes.
- Mode: qualifying for Tax Assistant; the printed matter is given in English.
- Counting: every keystroke (including spaces and punctuation) is counted.
To pass comfortably, train at a steady rhythm rather than racing. Our exam mode reproduces the keystroke-counting style of DEST so your practice score reflects the real measure used by SSC.
